Theory - Harmony, History, Counterpoint, Analysis, Composition

Course

Music is communication.  A language.  For effective communication in any language, a deep comprehension of that language is essential- how it's constructed, how it's used, it's meanings, it's context, it's intricacies, it's subtleties.  Comprehension of our spoken/written language ensures that we can communicate our thoughts and ideas to the world or, perhaps, interpret the thoughts and ideas of someone else for our own enjoyment or that of others.  Studying theory gives music students that solid foundation for comprehension.  Rudiments, harmony, history, counterpoint and analysis unlock the mysteries on each page; let us peer inside the hearts and minds of the composers; give us the keys to effective communication.  Theory makes the music become "more than just notes".
