Workshops | What Every Musician Needs To Know About The Body

KIMBERLY BARBER, ANDOVER EDUCATOR®

Kimberly Barber is a Licensed Andover Educator teaching Body Mapping for Musicians. This course is for all musicians and can be tailored to suit specialized instrument groups as needed. This 6-hour course will be offered in one full day with an hour break (bring your own lunch!). The course will focus on specific aspects of the work according to the needs of the group in question. SIX-HOUR COURSE

Focus:
Through visual, audio and physical experimentation, musicians are taught about their body map—the neuronal self-representation of their bodies in their brain. Participants are given detailed anatomical information about their body’s structure, function and size to encourage free, efficient movement in their playing or singing. The goal is the prevention of injury, freedom from pain and optimal use of their instrument/voice.
Format:
The course is presented in an informal setting throughout one-day. It consists of two three-hour sessions (with short breaks between) separated by a one-hour lunch break. Course groups generally consist of about 20 musicians. There is plenty of time given to embody the materials through practical exercises and explorations, examination of skeletal models and visual aids.
Content:
Hour One: Somatics, Senses and Attention—understanding the basic principles of Body Mapping; learning to use the kinesthetic sense; cultivating inclusive awareness
Hour Two: The Places of Balance—recognizing the weight bearing and delivery capacity of the skeleton, finding optimal postural balance and using it to mechanical advantage in singing and playing
Hour Three: The Arm Structure—detailed anatomy and optimal use of the arm structure
Hour Four: The Movement and Structures of Breathing—breathing, articulation, etc.
Hour Five: The Lower Limb—function, structure and size of the leg for optimal movement in music making
Hour Six: Practical Integration of Principles—participants are encouraged to bring their instruments and work with the instructor in a group setting to embody the principles learned in the course; instruction in Constructive Rest and other exercises to improve body awareness

Building Musicianship with the Body **

Course

Private lessons are designed to improve your musicianship, dictation, rhytham and/or aural skills. The teacher will use Dalcroze inspired activities and drumming to engage you at all times. Lessons may include movement games, active listening, quick reaction exercises, vocal bruitage, singing, and improvisation. This is an opportunity to use your whole body to tune your ears. Bare feet and some outdoor work may be required.

Piano Facility Course

Course

The goal of this course is to assist students in attaining facility at the keyboard and enabling them to pass the Equivalency Exam requirement!
Using a methodical approach and suiting the individual needs of students, this will be
accomplished through various assignments designed to build technique and sight reading skills at the piano. The instructor will also help students learn a variety of repertoire. Students who have prepared all of the necessary requirements, may take the examination at the end of the course.

Have you signed up for Beckettfest yet? There is still room in many of the classes. If you are interested PLEASE be sure to talk to your teacher and get registered - deadline is Friday, March 11.

Thoughts of An Adjudicator: It is the season for music festivals - both competitive and non - and we start preparing to present our best work as part of 'The Game". The non-competitive Beckettfest is a chance to prepare, present and appreciate. Expert and enthusiastic listeners will share their views on a particular piece, style or performance and provide hints on how to improve and secure. In this open forum we learn from each other - closer to a master class or public lesson. What better way to use our time in the pursuit of excellence and, well, fun! It is also the perfect opportunity to get our questions answered and drop in on other instrument classes - pianists can hear singers, guitarists can observe saxophone and so on. From an adjudicator's point of view, it is a chance to air my favourite lessons regarding imagination, ornamentation and phrasing!

Spend a week finding inspiration and honing your recital skills through an exploration of art song and opera repertoire with group and private lessons, yoga for singers and acting 101. Join Catherine Gardner, soprano, Mark Gardner, baritone, and Justyna Szajna, pianist and yoga instructor for an exciting week which will culminate in a final performance for family and friends. Ages 13-19. Prior voice lessons recommended, though applications will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

Jazz for Adults

Summer Program

In an effort to bring jazz culture and creative performance opportunities to an unserved population in Waterloo Region, Jazz for Adults is a new initiative directed toward the adult Jazz for Adults will launch its inaugural program from July 11-15, 2016, coinciding with the Uptown Waterloo Jazz Festival weekend (July 15-17). Have you always wanted to learn jazz but thought it was too late? Are you classically trained but interested in entering the jazz world? Are you a total beginner looking to explore jazzy musical horizons? This program is for you! Join Mary-Catherine Pazzano, local jazz singer, and other talented jazz mentors in a week-long jazz day camp geared toward adult singers/instrumentalists. You will learn about jazz style, performance, and technique within a combo setting. Musicians and students of all musical levels are welcome! Whether you have a background in playing or singing jazz, and are looking to expand your skills, or whether you have no background in jazz at all, Mary-Catherine and her team will ensure you have the tools necessary to be successful! Rehearse and learn from Monday-Friday, and then showcase your talents with an audience on the afternoon of Friday, July 15!
